Since 1976, Habitat for Humanity has helped more than 29 million people globally, to build or renovate the place they call home. In Sri Lanka, since 1994 Habitat has supported over 27,000 families and nearly 110,000 people with new homes.

Who We Are

We build strength, stability and self-reliance.

We are an International Non-Profit organization dedicated to fighting global poverty housing and homelessness through affordable housing and sanitation facilities across Sri Lanka.

What We Do

Safe, affordable durable homes

At Habitat for Humanity we don’t just build homes, we build communities. We construct safe, affordable durable homes for families in need. Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka works to lay the foundations for the future and create change that impacts generations.

Home Construction

Habitat builds affordable homes for families in urgent need of safe shelter. These Habitat homes are large enough for the homeowner family’s needs, but small enough to keep construction and maintenance costs affordable.

Home Improvements

Habitat rehabilitates and repairs houses with the help of homeowners, skilled personnel, volunteer labor and financial and material donations. Habitat’s Home Improvement program enables vulnerable families to achieve stability.

Water and Sanitation

Habitat provides communities with access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities and proper hygiene through the construction of water and sanitation facilities and through the provision of hygiene awareness.

Community Development

Habitat’s interventions in communities precipitate community development. Habitat goes beyond building houses and focuses on building resilient communities with access to infrastructure and facilities.

Disaster Response

Through its Disaster Risk Reduction programs Habitat supports marginalized communities to become disaster-resilient communities. Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka’s largest disaster response program focused on constructing homes for nearly 5,000 families in the aftermath of the 2004 Tsunami.

Environmentally Friendly Technology

Since 2016 Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka has been focused on promoting groundbreaking environmentally friendly construction technology, referred to as ‘Appropriate Technology’ which explores construction using Earth Blocks.

A Place to Call Home

This home means so much more to us than a permanent place to live. My wife and I know that this is a ladder for my children to dream and do things we were not able to when we were their age.

National Housing Day 2020

Out of 6 million families living in Sri Lanka, nearly 800,000 families live in poor housing conditions. Each day, more and more families find themselves in a struggle to keep a decent roof over their heads. This National Housing Week, Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka highlights the urgent need for affordable and adequate housing solutions for these vulnerable families. Today, we renew our commitment towards building a nation where every family will have a safe a decent place to call home.

Habitat for Humanity's Brand Ambassador

On May 7th, 2014 Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka was proudly featured on MTV's "Good morning Sri Lanka" show. The breakfast show watched by millions of Sri Lankan's Island wide also included a pre-recorded interview of Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka's brand ambassador Ms. Otara Gunewardene, who spoke about her involvement with Habitat, corporate social responsibility and volunteering. Ms. Otara also urged business people like her to join hands with Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka and contribute to the alleviation of poverty housing in Sri Lanka.
