Why Volunteer with Habitat?
Volunteers are the heart and soul of Habitat for Humanity. Over the past 20 years, time and again Habitat volunteers have shown their passion and commitment to supporting and empowering local communities in Sri Lanka, by building homes for some of the most vulnerable families in the country. The recent ranking of Sri Lanka as the number one country in the world by participation in volunteer time (The World Giving Index 2019), is testament to this.
From teenagers to retirees, we meet people from all walks of life who have the heart to contribute talents and time to Habitat. Regardless of the “why” they volunteer, every Habitat homeowner, volunteer and staff member has one thing in common. We all love the work - and the reward. Knowing that you have contributed towards uplifting the lives of families in need.

In celebration of International Women’s Day a Youth Rebuild is being planned in March 2022. Youth volunteers between the ages of 15-35 from schools, universities, church groups and organizations should register their interest to participate in this event.
Habitat Sri Lanka truly acted as the pioneers in sparking the change in more than 100 delegates of ‘The International Model UN’ through the TIMUN Youth Build held in September 2019. Volunteering with Habitat we had the opportunity to be agents of change. We were fortunate to witness the tangible change that Habitat Sri Lanka created in the lives of over 30 visually impaired families in Negombo.
I have volunteered twice with Habitat Sri Lanka. Both volunteer builds were organized perfectly. It was evident how much thought and care was put into the safety and comfort of the volunteers and the Habitat representatives were incredibly kind and helpful which made working with Habitat better than I could’ve ever imagined. Seeing the smiles on the faces of the home partners as they thanked us for our hard work was truly heartwarming and rewarding.
“Knowledge is of no use if it’s not put into action” and Habitat for Humanity did just that. It taught us unity, equality, and most importantly respect. Working with my team was a wonderful experience and memory that will never fade.
