NO HAND OUTS, NO GIVEAWAYS, JUST A LITTLE HELP
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms access to adequate housing as a vital part of human rights. Housing fulfills the basic human physical need for shelter but also satisfies social requirements. A house provides a centre for an individual and the basis for family life, emerging as an important symbol of social standing and aspirations. An adequate environment fundamentally changes the foundation of a family. It builds stronger families, improved health and proper environments for children to study and grow. The end result often leads to families gaining new employment opportunities.
A decent home is a foundation for a better life
Just like food, clothing, education and medical care, housing is a basic human right.
Research shows strong links between housing and physical health, mental health, educational achievements and lower crime rates. Improved housing positively impacts all these factors within a family’s life. These outcomes benefit not only the family but the wider community, the economy, and society as a whole. Addressing the housing issue is more than an act of charity, it is an investment in the future of our society.

Habitat’s Housing programme is not a give-away programme. Families who receive a hand up from Habitat work in partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Sweat equity is the investment a family makes in their future. Families invest a minimum of 500 hours of their time to build their own home or another Habitat home for others in their communities.

Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka is a member of Habitat for Humanity International, which has built more than 26,600 houses worldwide, with an average family size of four. That’s over 106,000 people whose living conditions have been improved through Habitat’s work.
Help us to keep serving more families in need.
