Fostering Youth Volunteerism in Partnership with The International Model United Nations
15th February of 2021

Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka partners with The International Model United Nations (TIMUN) to foster Youth Volunteerism in Sri Lanka.

The 5th Session of The International Model United Nations (TIMUN) was held virtually from the 5 – 7 of February 2021, bringing together more than 100 youth delegates to deliberate on matters of global significance through discussions on international relations, which closely parallels the United Nations and its proceedings. This year, the conference was centered around the theme of “Think Global, Act Local” in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka, as TIMUN’s official Social Impact Partner.

Habitat Sri Lanka’s National Director, Mr. Yu Hwa Li, delivered the keynote address at the TIMUN 2021 conference, emphasizing the need for Youth Activism to bring about meaningful change in our world, especially during these unprecedented times. Addressing the delegates, Mr. Li commented that, “a combination of Intelligence and Activism are the ideal ingredients for a meaningful partnership between Habitat and TIMUN”.

TIMUN first joined hands with Habitat Sri Lanka in 2019, when more than 100 youth delegates volunteered at a Habitat Sri Lanka build site to paint the homes for visually impaired persons in Negombo. This partnership enabled the youth delegates from various nationalities and ethnicities to go beyond the conference room and put into practice their learnings and engage in sustainable development at the community level making a tangible change and gaining a wholesome experience.

Celebrating 26 years of operations in Sri Lanka, Habitat for Humanity has assisted more than 27,000 families by building homes, facilitating access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities for communities, and assisting families to improve their shelter conditions. For more than 20 years Habitat Sri Lanka has hosted volunteers from across the world, bridging cultures and fostering volunteerism that creates tangible change – building homes and transforming communities across Sri Lanka.
